Skeletal Muscle

  • Skeletal muscle is a highly durable tissues that helps you perform everyday activities, such as walking, breathing, etc.
  • Most skeletal muscle injuries occur during sports.
  • When the muscle is actually torn or ripped away from the tendon, it is called an avulsion. This can be caused by extreme force or muscle overload.
  • Symptoms of an avulsion include extreme pain and loss of function in the injured area.
  • Treatment for an avulsion will sometimes involve surgery to reattach the muscle to the tendon. You can also take anti-inflammatory drugs to help the swelling. You may also have to participate in physical therapy to build muscles and be able to do everyday tasks. The physical therapy exercises aim to build strength and regain motion in muscles. In the first two weeks of physical therapy, you should notice a big improvement, but it will take 6-8 weeks for full recovery and take months to regain the muscle mass of the injured spot due to lack of use of the muscle.
